Teachers CAN is a network led by young, transformational teachers that harnesses teacher enthusiasm to help students achieve their greatest potential.
Teachers CAN aspire to expand this network by implementing the following strategies:
- Bringing together young educators
- Increasing their influence
- Increasing the volume of their voices
The mission of CAN is to fight for an environment in which young teachers are acknowledged as important members of the educational ecosystem.
The Teachers CAN Manifesto, which unites young teachers around five basic ideals, lies at the heart of our mission. Teachers are able to:
- Encourage students to achieve their full potential in all parts of their lives.
- In schools, engage as equals and for equality.
- Innovate and take ownership of school-wide teaching methods.
- Participate actively in school structures.
- Join a larger movement for social change.
The high learning curve and intensity of the first years of teaching are recognized by Teachers CAN.
When you add in the lack of peer support and connections, the undervaluing of teachers’ voices in the broader ecosystem, and the restricted ability to affect the day-to-day operations of classrooms, you have a recipe for a growing number of young teachers leaving the field.
To address this, we are working to build new ways for us to see ourselves and our role in the educational system, as well as our individual and communal identities as change agents.
The annual Teachers CAN fellowship is for 25 young teachers between the ages of 23 and 35 who are based anywhere in South Africa.
The following elements will be included in the one-year program:
- Immersions — three workshops held over the months of March, June, and September. The immersions will be conducted in a hybrid manner, combining in-person and online interactions.
- Peer learning – this is an opportunity for fellows to advance in their careers by sharing their experiences and working together to achieve better results.
- Building a network – fellows will have the chance to engage with the larger network through a variety of channels, allowing them to put their learning into practice and solidify their identity as vital actors in the eco-system.
