He does much more than writing songs and singing, he is also a politician, a renown entrepreneur, occasional actor, and composer. Youssou N’Dour became Senegal’s Minister of Tourism in April 2012 to September 2013.
He is known for his contribution in developing Senegalese type of popular music called mbalax, type of music genre that integrates well into traditional polyrhythm which is a derivative of Wolof sabar with popular urban dance music that originated from Africa.
He was used as a subject of an award-winning film Return to Gorée (2007) which he directed alongside Pierre-Yves Borgeaud. Also in 2008, I Bring What I Love (2008) was released to the world, a movie directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi.
