Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe is a Nigerian economist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. The finance maestro is the current managing director and CEO of Access Bank Plc.

A commercial financial institution which he acquired and took to the next level via his financial expertise, discipline, and ingenuity.

Early Life

Herbert Wigwe, the Access Bank Plc. CEO was born in 1966 at Ibadan, Oyo State Capital into the family of Pastor Shingle Wigwe the then Director-General of the Nigeria Television Authority and her mother too, Mrs. Wigwe was a nurse at the time.

At a tender age, Herbert derives pleasure in counting and solving numbers. This hobby led him and his friend into the invention of a game which they attributed as a “mental mathematics.” A game where they solve mathematical problems and equations without using any counter or calculator.

Educational Background

Herbert was such a brilliant child with a mathematical instinct. Ever since he was a kid, the entrepreneur has always been his major goal even though he was a good cricket player during his secondary school days.

He had attended Federal Government College in Sokoto before he moved to Federal Government College, Warri in 1982 where he got his senior secondary school certificate.

In 1982, Herbert wrote his first JAMB exam but unfortunately, he failed. He kept his hope alive and never relents; his determination to push forward secured him admission in 1983, where he studied Accounting at the University of Nigeria Nsukka.

The great economist and banker graduated with Second Class Upper in 1987 and he completed his NYSC in 1988. Not long after, Herbert landed a job as a graduate assistant with Coopers and Lybrand Associates, Lagos, Nigeria.

In 1990, Herbert subsequently won a British scholarship admission and he proceeded to North Wales University where he studied Banking and Finance at Master level.

Career

The Access Bank CEO returned back home from the United Kingdom and he joined a fast-rising financial institution; Guaranty Trust Bank where he worked as an accountant before he rose to the rank of an Executive Director at a younger age of 32.

In 2002, he fulfilled his age-long entrepreneurship dream when he partnered with Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede to acquire Access Bank plc. With his financial expertise and ingenuity, Herbert grew Access Bank into one of the largest and highly sought Banks in the whole of Africa.

However, such was the great economist’s first-ever entrepreneurial venture and same turned out to be his most successful business in the entrepreneurial realm.

Family Life

Herbert O. Wigwe is a devoted father, a caring and loving husband, too. He nourishes and treasures his family as his greatest assets; Despite his busy schedule, he managed to stay in touch with his family from time to time.

He married his dear wife, Chizoba Wigwe after four months of their courtship and that was when he returned home from abroad where he had his first Master’s degree. Ever since then, the couple has live happily and their marriage was blessed with four kids.
