A phishing campaign is currently targeting Belgian and French e-mail boxes again as hackers have found means to use, online payments service company, PayPal, to try to retrieve users’ personal and banking data.
The email uses the specific structure of PayPal’s letters, with a perfectly centered logo, an invoice and legal data at the bottom of the email.
Most text will appear as the below,
“Your account is the subject of suspicious transactions. We have temporarily restricted your account due to this suspicious activity until the issue is resolved. If you have not authorized this transaction, please dispute the transaction as soon as possible by clicking on the button below.”
One element, however, makes it possible to easily identify the scam at first glance: the address used is an extension: “@skynet”.
Remember, if there is a problem with your PayPal account, you should logically receive an email from an @paypal address, and certainly not from any other source or address. Users are advised to show caution if they see an email from PayPal in the coming days as their personal and banking data can be exposed if they click on the link.
A month ago, the federal police warned the population of the massive traffic of a phishing campaign targeting PayPal users in Belgium.
If in doubt, it is better to avoid clicking on a link from a suspicious email. Connect directly to the service by entering its html address in your browser and check if everything is in order. You can also easily check your account’s payment history this way.
Most of the time, these fraudulent phishing techniques are used to retrieve personal data, hack an account or gain access to an online payment service.
