The PTDF Scholarship 2021, or in full, Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) scholarship is an in-country and overseas annual scholarship offered by the Federal Government to selected Nigerian students in the oil and gas field of study.
This scholarship scheme was initiated with the primary aim of “training Nigerians such that after a given period, Nigerians will take over the running of the Industry from exploration to marketing.”
PTDF Scholarship 2021 Eligibility
- The PTDF Scholarship 2021 is available to Nigerian undergraduates as well as postgraduates studying for their masters and PhD.
- To provide a level playing ground for all applicants, past beneficiaries of any PTDF Scholarship can not apply at a lower or same level.
- If you are currently a grantee of a scholarship from another body, you are ineligible to apply for the PTDF Scholarship 2021.
- Undergraduates applying for the PTDF Scholarship 2021 must be in their second study year.
- The most important criteria of all is that the PTDF Scholarship is available for only those studying a course in oil and gas.
- Polytechnics and colleges of education, as well as, private and state universities are not eligible for the PTDF Scholarship. Accepted institutions have been streamlined to some 43 Federal Universities. Here are all the approved federal universities eligible for the PTDF Scholarship 2021.

How to Apply for PTDF Scholarship 2021
Interested candidates can apply for the PTDF Scholarship remotely via the Internet on the official application portal: scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng.
To apply candidates will need to first create an online account on this aesthetically pleasing website, with email a vital requirement.
Note that all documents, except your passport picture should be in pdf format, not word or doc. Also no file should exceed the file size limit stated on the application portal.
Undergraduates
For the 2021 PTDF Scholarship for undergraduates, applicants will be asked to upload the following documents:
- Evidence of statement of WAEC/SSCE/NECO results with at least 5 credits, including English Language and Mathematics (not more than 2 sittings and the first sitting result must be uploaded).
- Letter of admission into the University
- First year academic transcript(s) duly signed and stamped by HOD/Exams Officer or any authorized staff.
- Certificate of indigene-ship (evidence of state of origin and local government)
- Personal statement of a minimum of 1000 words stating reasons for undertaking the course of study.
Postgraduates
- First Degree Certificates or Statement of Results
- NYSC Certificate or letter of exemption
- WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO Result(s)
- Admission Letter (2019/2020 or 2020/2021 session)
- Personal Statement
- Certificate of indigene ship (evidence of state of origin and local government)
PhD applicants will be required to provide additional documents, namely:
- Second Degree Certificates or Statement of Results

PTDF Scholarship 2021 Requirements
Although application for the PTDF Scholarship is easy and straightforward, candidates need to thoroughly scrutinise the numerous terms, conditions, instructions, guidelines and requirements to access this form.
Here are all the PTDF Scholarship 2021 requirements:
Undergraduates
- Applicants must possess 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO including English Language and Mathematics
- To fully verify the identity of applicants, every candidate will need to provide a validated National Identity Number (NIN). If you don’t have a NIN, here’s how to acquire one.
- Applicants must possess a valid admission letter into any of the said Federal University to stand a chance of being assessed.
- For undergraduates, Students must have been admitted into the University in 2018/19 academic year only.
- Possess a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 on scale of 5 or 3.0 on a scale of 4 which is equivalent to 2.1 in the first year for the 2018/19 batch of students.
- Since the final applicants selection boils down to grades candidates must have in hand transcripts signed and stamped by HOD/Exams Officer or any authorized staff.
Masters
- Applicants must possess full time admission letter into any of the Federal Universities.
- A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an oil and gas related field or a 2.2 with a minimum working experience of 2 years in the oil and gas industry.
- Course of study should be related to oil and gas industry.
- Possess at least 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO results (not more than 2 sittings and the two results must precede the first degree)
- National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of exemption
- Certificate of indigene ship (evidence of state of origin and local government)
- Personal statement of a minimum of 1000 words stating reasons for undertaking the course of study
PhD
- Applicants must possess full time admission letter into any of the Federal Universities.
- A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in an Oil and Gas related field or a 2.2 in their first degree with a minimum working experience of 2 years in the oil and gas industry
- A minimum of merit in a second-degree certificate in an oil and gas related discipline
- Possess at least 5 credits in WAEC/SSCE/NECO results (not more than 2 sittings and the two results must precede the first degree)
- National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of exemption
- Certificate of indigene ship (evidence of state of origin and local government).
- Research area must be relevant to the oil and gas industry
- PhD research proposal of not more than 6 pages. The proposal template can be accessed via the applicants profile on the PTDF Scholarship Management Portal.
In general, for postgraduates, the applicant’s admission letter should be within a validity period of 12 months (2019/2020 or 2020/2021 session).
How are PTDF Scholarship Awardees Chosen
The PTDF Scholarship body claims that the selection process is “highly competitive, and merit driven.” And that the “selection of candidates is based on equitable representation of the 36 States of the Federation and FCT.”
According to the PTDF, a selection panel will be organised to pick from the myriads of applications using the following criteria:
- Academic merit as evidenced by quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, other professional qualifications acquired and relevant publications to be referenced by applicants.
- Membership of professional bodies.
- The viability of the study/research plan (PhD applicants only)
- Undergraduate and Postgraduate (MSC) applicants are required to make a case for their scholarship by submitting a statement of purpose stating the reason(s) they wish to undertake the study, the relevance of the proposed study to the industry and its expected impact on national development.
- PhD applicants are required to submit a research proposal of not more than 6 pages to include topic, introduction, literature review, research question(s), novelty, methodology, mode of data collection(s), expected outcome(s), relevance to the industry and appropriate references
How Much is PTDF Scholarship Worth
Although the estimate or total worth of the PTDF Scholarship is yet to be ascertained, it is without a doubt a full scholarship.
Past recipients have however revealed that a working laptop as well as ₦250,000, will be awarded as first payment only.
