What Are the Ingredients for Making Beef Fried Rice?

Beef Fried Rice - The Country Cook

You need to bring several ingredients together before you can make beef fried rice with an inviting texture and a tantalizingly delicious taste. While some of these ingredients merely help garnish the beef fried rice, certain others actually add an extra layer of flavour to the dish.

Rice is expectedly the chief ingredient for making beef fried rice but without some other essential ingredients, the dish is unlikely to appear tantalizingly delicious. Meanwhile, just any variety of rice would go well with the other ingredients for making beef fried rice.

Below is a detailed list of the other ingredients recommended in this recipe for making beef fried rice:

  • Sirloin steak
  • Eggs
  • Frozen peas and carrots
  • Vegetable oil
  • Green onions –Although an optional ingredient, the green onion may be needed to further garnish the beef fried rice
  • Onion
  • Toasted sesame oil –This appears quite optional since you’re still likely to have excellent beef fried rice if you don’t include sesame oil in the ingredients
  • Soy sauce
  • Oyster sauce –This sauce appears somewhat optional but quite frankly, it helps add an extra layer of flavour
  • Dark soy sauce

To keep the ingredients in the right proportion, below is what we recommend for three cups of cooked rice:

  • Oyster sauce –one tablespoon
  • Well-minced green onions
  • Vegetable oil –two tablespoons
  • Dark soy sauce –two tablespoons
  • Two eggs
  • Frozen peas and carrots –one cup
  • Soy sauce –two tablespoons
  • Sirloin steak –eight ounces divided into strips
  • Dark soy sauce –two tablespoons
  • Onion –half a cup of small minced onion is enough
  • Toasted sesame oil –half a teaspoon

Steps for Making Beef Fried Rice

  • Set down a skillet (or frying pan)
  • Bring the sesame oil and the three sauces (oyster, soy, and dark soy) together in a bowl. Stir them till they form an even mixture
  • Pour little vegetable oil (about ¼ of the entire veg oil) into the skillet
  • Start heating the skillet
  • Get the sirloin steak ready and pour it into the heating oil
  • Cook this beef (sirloin steak) for about 5 minutes or until it begins charring slightly
  • Remove the sirloin steak from the heating skillet and keep it aside
  • Again, pour little vegetable oil (about ¼ of the remaining oil) into the skillet
  • Add the small minced onion to the skillet
  • Let the onion fry for about 2 minutes. Now the onion should feel soft and appear brown
  • Then pour the carrots and peas into the skillet
  • Let them fry for 3 minutes when they must have softened a little bit
  • Scoop out these veggies (peas and carrots) into the bowl containing the cooked beef (sirloin steak) you kept aside earlier
  • Pour little oil (about ¼ of the vegetable oil left) into the skillet
  • Beat the (two) eggs and add to the skillet
  • Fry the beaten eggs in the skillet, ensure you stir them well
  • After frying, bring the eggs into the bowl containing the veggies and the sirloin steak
  • Pour the remainder of the vegetable oil into the frying pan
  • Bring the (three cups of) cooked rice and empty the rice into the frying pan
  • Let the rice fry for about three minutes. Ensure you stir it while frying
  • When the rice has fried well (and perhaps charred a little bit) return the fried veggies, eggs and beef (sirloin steak) to the pan
  • Let them blend with the rice by stirring them well
  • Now you’ll have to bring the three sauces (oyster, soy and dark soy) you blended earlier, and pour them into the pan
  • Stir the frying pan’s contents (rice, beef, veggies, eggs and combined sauce) well while cooking them for 4 minutes. At this point, the contents will not only have blended well but also cooked fully with a scrumptious flavour
  • Bring the fully cooked beef fried rice out of the pan and prepare to serve

While this beef fried rice can go well with various side dishes, you may want to give it a more tantalizing appearance. This is one good reason why we included (well-minced) green onions in our earlier list of ingredients for making beef fried rice. Layer your beef fried rice with green onions and you’d see how you’ve really added a tantalizing garnish to the dish.

Storing Leftover Beef Fried Rice

If you can’t finish your beef fried rice at once, you may want to know how best to store the leftover and prevent it from losing flavour.

To store your leftover beef fried rice, you first need to keep it in a well-sealed container before placing it in a freezer or fridge. Beef fried rice can be stored in a fridge for about 5 days, provided the rice is in a well-sealed container.

The second storage option –which is an even better way to prolong storage life –is to keep the beef fried rice in a freezer. Get a Ziploc bag (or another airtight container) to keep the rice in before storing it in the freezer.

If you stick to freezing as the preferred storage option, you may be able to store the beef fried rice for 4 months and even more.

When there’s the need to reheat frozen beef fried rice, you can reheat the rice in a microwave. But before placing in the microwave for reheating, ensure you first thaw the frozen beef fried rice.

Few Things to Note

  1. You need to have cooked (boiled) your rice before attempting to follow our recipe for making beef fried rice.
  2. You can choose a different kind of beef in place of sirloin steak.
  3. It is not extremely necessary that you include all three of the listed sauces. You can go with any two of the sauces.

Commonly Asked Questions about Making Beef Fried Rice

Can I Use a Different Kind of Beef?

In our recipe for making beef fried rice, sirloin steak is favoured partly due to its tender feel. If you can’t get sirloin steak, you can opt for another tender beef variety such as flank steak.

Is Dark Soy Sauce a Must in Making Beef Fried Rice?

Inasmuch as it’s not a must to include all of the three recommended sauces (oyster sauce, soy sauce and dark soy sauce) in making beef fried rice, you can safely leave out the dark soy sauce. However, dark soy sauce is a nice ingredient, courtesy of its ability to deeply enrich the flavour of the beef fried rice. In fact, it is the primary ingredient that induces the characteristic colour of fried rice.

If dark soy sauce isn’t available, ensure you generously combine normal soy sauce and oyster sauce in making the beef fried rice.

What Is the Ideal Rice Variety?

Along with the other ingredients in our recipe, any rice variety –regardless of the colour –is suitable for making beef fried rice.
