James Cameron’s Avatar is back at the top of the pantheon of the highest grossing films in cinema history, as at Monday, March 15th.
According to the IMDB-owned box-office revenue tracking website, Box Office Mojo, the film is just ahead of 2019’s superhero assemblage blockbuster hit, Avengers: Endgame (2.795 billion) with a worldwide grossing of 2.810 billion US dollars.
Cameron’s mega hit will probably be able to extend the current narrow lead, thanks to the filmmaker’s fans or ‘stans’ China , where the film is being shown again. The 3D fantasy epic, which premiered in 2009, had already been the top-selling film in the world for ten years before it was overtaken by Avengers: Endgame.
However, the record remains within rights of the same parent company. The “Avengers” series has been part of Disney’s world since the entertainment giants acquired the Marvel Universe and Studio in 2009 for $4 billion.
In 2019, Disney extended their reach to another major film studio when they purchased then 20th Century Fox – which is today operated as 20th Century Studios – the original right holders of Avatar. .
“We are proud to reach this great milestone, but Jim (James Cameron) and I are most thrilled that the film is back in theatres during these unprecedented times, and we want to thank our Chinese fans for their support,” said Avatar producer, Jon Landau, to the BBC.
In China, the cinemas have been reopened again for the past since July 2020, barely weeks after Nigeria flung the doors of her cinemas ajar on 11th September 2020, after battling the Covid-19 pandemic for just over half a year.

Cameron is currently working on four sequels to Avatar. The first of these should, after several postponements, arrive in cinemas in December 2022, according to the current status.
