Ire Aderinokun is well known as one of Nigeria’s most successful female programmers. She presently serves at Big Cabal as the Head of Design and Product. Besides being skilled in JavaScript, CSS and HTML, Ire Aderinokun is a prolific front-end developer cum UI designer.
She is considered an outstanding programmer for having gained the mastery of programming without the help of a mentor. Therefore, she describes herself as a “self-taught programmer”.
This post is all about the biography of Ire Aderinokun and reading it further, you’ll find essential information about the programmer’s career, educational background, contributions as well as endeavours outside of programming.
Family and Educational Background
Ire Aderinokun is a native of Ogun state born of Nigerian parents: Chief Olutayo Aderinokun (father) and Mrs. Olufunlola Aderinokun (mother). Her father, late Chief Olutayo Aderinokun, was a former Chief Executive Officer at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB).
Ire Aderinokun had her preliminary education in Nigeria but upon the completion of secondary education, she was relocated overseas where she bagged a BSc in Experimental Psychology from the University of Bristol. At the end of her BSc, Ire enrolled in the same university for her Masters in Law. It was in the course of this Masters’ programme that Ire opted to enroll in Codeacademy for a web design course.
Ire Aderinokun is an acclaimed programming expert as well as the only female among Nigeria’s three Google developer experts. She is believed to have developed a flair for programming right from childhood. Ire was only a 13-year-old child when she took advantage of her knack for online games to create her first website.
Ire was goaded on by her parents to pursue a different career rather than stick to her flair of website design. Thereupon, Ire took her academic career to the tertiary level at which she earned a Masters in Law (from UK’s University of Bristol) as well as a BSc in Experimental Psychology.
At childhood, Ire’s dream was to be a website developer. Although parental influence stimulated Ire into trading web development for an academic career (which earned her a BSc in Experimental Psychology and an MA in Law), Ire’s break from web development was only temporal. As we speak, Ire is better known for web development –a skill which has earned her a place amongst Nigeria’s most successful programmers.
Since web development had remained her flair right from childhood, Ire, in the course of her Masters, opted to follow her passion. Consequently, she enrolled in an online platform, Codeacademy, where people learn web development. Having completed her web development course at Codeacademy, coupled with the attainment of her Masters’ degree, Ire decided to put her web development education to use by working as a freelance web developer.
Ire Aderinokun is currently engaged by Big Cabal –a Lagos-based media outfit that specializes in content creation. Aderinokun, who currently serves as Big Cabal’s Head of Design and Product, was elected Head of Technology at Big Cabal in 2015.

Nanodegree Scholarship by Ire Aderinokun
In 2017, Ire Aderinokun organized a scholarship scheme for Nigerian women who were willing to bag some tech-related education. The education was described as a Nanodegree which any selected candidate was meant to acquire within the average duration of 6 months.
According to Ire herself, she was able to sponsor seven Nigerian women for Nanodegrees at Udacity. However, not more than 4 of the 7 scholarship beneficiaries eventually completed their chosen Nanodegrees.
Emphasizing the importance of a Nanodegree, Ire revealed that the Nanodegree she completed boosted her confidence level and encouraged her to search for a relevant job in a company not based in Nigeria. On this premise, Ire was motivated to organize the Nanodegree scholarship scheme as an avenue for the beneficiaries to have her kind of “valuable experience”. As one would have thought, Aderinokun’s scholarship scheme was a well-crafted opportunity for the average Nigerian developer to acquire a Nanodegree. This is because a Nanodegree costs as much as $200 per month whereas the monthly earnings of the average developer stand at $300.
Revealing why she considered only females for the scholarship scheme, Aderinokun remarked that she wanted to see more females doing what she does.
Despite advertising her Nanodegree scholarship as a female-only scheme, no less than 6 males applied for the scheme. Also, as many as 293 Nigerians applied for the scheme whereas Ire (the organizer) eventually selected only 7 applicants for the scholarship.
Following the selection of potential candidates, interviews were organized for the candidates in order to avoid giving out scholarship slots to illegal candidates. The entire selection process was quite rigorous for Ire but in the end; and courtesy of support from friends who assisted in “sorting through the candidates”; she was able to pick 7 women from the initial 293 applicants.
