Why do students get a lot of anticipation especially when their result is released? The need for keeping track of their previous Grade Point Average (GPA) so as to be aware of the likely grade or point they will be graduating with and to determine if there is any improvement in their academic performance and records is one of the major reasons for such anticipations.

Students from various institutions most especially in Nigeria are often faced with the difficulties of calculating their CGPA, GPA, or even GP. This article is aimed at providing you with the necessary information you need to be able to calculate either CGPA, GPA, or GP. However, the grading system and Cumulative Grade Point Average are different from school to school. Whistle some schools use four points (4-points) system, others use five points (5-point) system.

It is very important for students in higher institutions of learning to know how to calculate their GPA or GP so as to be able to add up their cumulative score (CGPA) at the end of each semester and or session. This method will assist students to keep records of his or her academic performance regularly and promote better performance.

Related Terms and their meaning

CGPA – Cumulative Grade Point Average. (This is what you have after both the first and second semesters. In summation and Division, amounting to it)

GPA – Grade Point Average ( This is what you have after every semester)

C.U – Credit Units

TCU – Total Credit Unit

G.P – Grade Point

TGP or TQP – Total Grade Point or Quality Point

How to calculate GPA?

Grade Point Average can be calculated by dividing the Total Grade point or the Total Quality Point (TQP/TGP) by the Total Credit Unit (TCU) for a particular semester.

Let’s take a look at an example;

If in a semester, a student earned 90 quality points for 21 credit units, the GPA will be;

GPA = TGP divided by TCU

That is,

90/21

= 4.28

How to Calculate CGPA?

Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) can be calculated by dividing the Total Quality Points (TQP) for all the semesters to date and dividing by the Total Credit Units (TCU) to date for all semesters (both first and second semester).

Let’s take a look at an example;

If in a semester a student earns a Quality Point of 90 for 21 Credit Unit (CU) in the first semester and earns a Quality Point (QP) of 87 for 20 Credit Unit (CU) in the second semester, His or Her Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be calculated as;

CGPA = TQP/TCU

= (90+87) divided by (21+20)

=   177 divided by 41

= 4.31

Your CGPA for that session will be,

CGPA = 4.31

Breaking it Down:

Let’s consider a first Semester result as shown below;
