Gates Cambridge Scholarship Programme 2022/2023 for Study at the University of Cambridge

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program began in October 2000, when the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated US$210 million to the University of Cambridge, making it the greatest single grant to a UK university.

Each year, Gates Cambridge awards approximately 80 full-fee scholarships to outstanding students from outside the United Kingdom who wish to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge in any discipline.

PhD students will be eligible for about two-thirds of the grants, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 awards available in the international round.

• A desire to make a difference in other people’s lives
• Potential for leadership

Eligibility

If you meet the following criteria, you may be eligible for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship:

• A national of a country other than the United Kingdom
• Applying to the University of Cambridge to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses:

PhD

MSc/MLitt

A year-long postgraduate program

The complete cost of studying at Cambridge is covered by a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Additionally, it offers discretionary funds.

* Composition at the University Fees vary depending on the type of student; applicants should consult the Graduate Studies brochure for exact amounts. If a student from the European Union has received a fee award from governmental authorities, they must accept it; otherwise, the Trust will not pay the fees.

Components with a degree of discretion

On a discretionary basis, the Trust evaluates applications for numerous sorts of supplementary funding:

Academic development funding – for attending conferences and courses, ranging from £500 to £2,000 depending on the length of your course.

The family allowance is worth up to £10,120 for one child and £14,440 for two or more children (2021-22 rate). A partner does not receive any funding.

Fieldwork – as part of your PhD, you may apply to keep your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee).

Maternity/Paternity money – if you need it, you can request to take a break from your studies for up to 6 months while still receiving your maintenance allowance.

Hardship funding is available in the event of unforeseen difficulties.

Timeline:

This round, which is aligned with the University’s postgraduate funding competition, will see the vast majority of applicants apply. There are two possible application deadlines, which are determined by the course you are applying for.
