Before we dive into the DIY tutorial, let’s know about the potentials of these ingredients on baby’s skin.

Sheabutter: This is a popular butter extracted from nuts. It has been used in so many DIY skincare formulation. I myself, I love to use it because of its great potentials. Shea butter contains vitamin A, E, and F which takes care of skin allergies, premature ageing and dry skin. What’s more, it is rich in antioxidants, which acts as a protective layer against the harmful UV rays that burn the skin and cause skin damage. Not to mention its intensive hydrating, healing and soothing effect it delivers to the skin. Your baby’s skin is gonna love it. 🙂

Mango butter: Similar to sheabutter, mango butter is yet another wonderful butter which intensely soothes, hydrates, heals and also nourishes the skin. Mango butter contains vitamin C, to help brighten and glow the skin. While the Vitamin A helps to increase the skin’s youthful appearance, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Beeswax: Aside helping in thickening the lotion, beeswax is the natural wax substance that bees produce. It heals and softens skin, and also an antibacterial agent. It can help you fight conditions like acne, sooth dry skin, sooth eczema, and smoothen stretch marks.

Carrot oil: Carrot is extremely rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A and E, to nourish, moisturizes and glows the skin. It also protects the skin from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
It has strong antiaging properties due to its rich content of vitamins A, C, and E.
Carrot oil tones and brightens the skin. So, if you’re looking for an oil to improve overall skin tone carrot oil is your best bet.

Organic Honey: Honey is packed with natural antioxidants and anti-microbial properties which help protect, repair and prevent skin damage. Honey is also quite calming to the skin which makes it very suitable for a tender & sensitive skin.
Honey also acts as a humectants which pull moisture from the atmosphere into the skin which literally help keep your baby’s skin hydrated and nourished.

Almond oil: Almond oil is the powerhouse of fatty acid which makes it a very hydrating and soothing oil. This rich-emollient oil has been used for centuries to treat dry skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis and also Improves acne.
Almond oil easily penetrates the skin to heal, sooth and hydrated dry skin all thanks to its wonderful silky texture and its richness in vitamins (A, E, B1 and B6).

Tea Tree essential oil: This oil has been used for decades because of its medicinal potentials. Tea Tree essential oil will treat inflammatory issues such as. Acne, rashes, psoriasis and eczema because of its richness in anti-inflammatory anti-microbial and anti-bacterial components. It also helps to heal wounds and sooths dry, itchy, and oily skin.

Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint essential oil is rich in menthol which increases healthy blood circulation on the skin area applied on, which I believe will be very beneficial to babies skin. When applied on the skin, peppermint essential oil sooths and refreshes the skin. It naturally cleanses the skin and has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It has a cooling effect which soothes irritation and inflammation due to acne. Which makes it very recommendable if your baby has rashes, psoriasis or eczema.

Preparation Method.

Step 1: Melt the sheabutter, mango butter and beeswax using double boiler method. How can this be done?.

Simply pour 2-3 glass cup of water into your sauce pan or cooking pot and place it on low heat (stove or gas cooker) and allow the water to heat up.

Get a steel bowl or glass jar, put in your sheabutter, mango butter, beewax and almond oil.

Place the steel bowl or glass jar with the ingredients inside the pot of water. Stir occasionally while you wait for all the ingredients to melt. You can read our in-depth guide on how to melt skincare ingredients using double method.

Step 2: Once the butters & beeswax have melted. Bring down the mixture from heat. Then wait for 1 minutes for mixture to cool down alittle.
You wouldn’t want to add essential oils to an extremely hot mixture, because they are going to loose their antioxidants potentials.

Step 3: After waiting for a minute. Then add other ingredients such as essential oil and honey.

Step 4: Give the mixture a thorough stir to get a creamy, smooth fluffy texture.

Application Method.

Apply on your baby’s skin morning and night after bath. A little goes a long way.

Note: If you’re making this lotion for a baby under 3 months, do not add any essential oils. Essential oils are not suitable for tender or sensitive skin as they may erupt irritations such as redness and dryness.
The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians notes that essential oils should not be used at all on infants under 3 months old. Even when diluted, essential oils can cause skin irritation and sun sensitivity.
