Turn Off Your Video Camera on Zoom Before Joining a Meeting

To disable your video camera before starting a meeting on Zoom:

  1. Open the Zoom client on your computer.
  2. Click the down-facing arrow beside the ‘New Meeting’ button.
  3. Un-check the “Start with video” option.

The meeting icon will now show a diagonal line through it, meaning that the video has been turned off by default for meetings you start from now onwards.

    1. Open Zoom and tap the ‘Join’ button.

  1. While in the meeting, hover your mouse over the app for options to appear on the screen.

  3. You can further disable your audio by using the ‘Mute’ button next to it.

How to Make Your Microphone and Video Off by Default

To choose whether Zoom automatically activates your webcam and microphone when joining a meeting, you can go into Zoom’s settings window.

To find it, click your profile icon at the top right corner of the main Zoom window and click “Settings.”

To automatically turn off your webcam video when joining a Zoom call, click the “Video” option at the left side of the Settings window.

Activate the “Turn off my video when joining a meeting” checkbox to the right of Meetings.

To automatically mute your microphone’s audio when you join a Zoom call, click the “Audio” option at the left side of the window.

You can still choose to enable your video and audio at any point in the meeting by clicking the buttons or using the appropriate keyboard shortcuts.
