Using double boiler method you can also dissolve your soap base into liquid to enable you add your desired ingredients.

What is Double Boiler Method In Skincare?

This is the act or process of dissolving skincare ingredients into liquids to enable you mix or add other skincare ingredients for easy incorporation.

Some skincare powders such as Kojic acid, and alpha arbutin are not water-soluble. Which means they can’t be dissolved in water and the only way they can be dissolved is when they are heated on a very low heat using double boiler method.

You can’t just add non water-soluble powders (powders that can’t dissolve in water) into your lotion or cream just like that. The truth of the matter is, they won’t disolve and won’t add any effectivness to the lotion or cream because they were not dissolved which causes it not to blend well with the lotion or cream. Remember skincare ingredients works well when it’s properly mixed and blended together.

In a situation when you just add Kojic acid powder or Alpha Arbutin powder to your lotion without dissolving them. It’s just like mixing your lotion or cream with some grains of sand. And when you’re applying the lotion or cream you’ll definitely feel the grains on your skin.

So it’s really recommended to ensure you disolve your skincare non water-soluble powders before mixing or adding to your lotion or cream. You can learn how to add Kojic acid and arbutin powder in your Lotion.

Double boiler method can also be used in dissolving soap base. A soap base in a solid soap that normally comes in cubes and its pure with no added addictives (ingredients). Used in formulating diy homemade soaps. You can read how to make a homemade moisturizing soap.

Note: When dissolving waxes or butters it’s advised to use any carrier oils of your choice such as Olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, etc to dissolve them using double boiler method. Water cannot be used in dissolving waxes or butters, only oils. But when dissolving skincare powders and soap base you should use distilled water or rose water.

You can also use carrier oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, etc to disolve lightening powders and soap base too, it all depends on your skincare formulation. Example: When making a DIY Kojic acid oil. Kojic acid is disolved in sunflower oil, using the double boiler method.

When dissolving your skincare ingredients, especially powders. Ensure the heat (fire) is low, to avoid the water from boiling. When the heat is too much the water boils, and when the water boils or becomes too hot, the skincare ingredients may loose their nutrients and effectivness.

So it’s advised to use low heat when dissolving your skincare ingredients using double boiler method to prevent the water from boiling, you just need a warm temperature to dissolve the powders.

Always ensure to use distilled or treated water in all your skincare mixings to avoid bacteria from getting into your diy skincare products.
