  1. CHANGE YOUR MENTALITY

Abilities are inbuilt but your MENTALITY can improve/limit your ABILITY.

You can’t call a book boring and expect it to be interesting. Even when it is interesting, you unknowingly keep ignoring the interesting part of the book.

If you want to read the so-called boring books, then you need to stop calling them boring. Change your mentality about that book today and you will be amazed at how interesting that book is.

  1. BE ACTIVE

Active reading has been proven to be one of the most effective reading strategy. It is a very effective study strategy you can use to study boring materials and remember more.

Below are some tips to study actively:

  • Highlight important points
  • Read out loud
  • Write it down in your own words

  1. TAKE FREQUENT BREAKS

Another important tip to take note is, “Taking breaks while studying”. Reading for 10hours non-stop may not be effective! It is better to read for an hour, take a break and then continue for another 1-2hours.

Trust me, this is more effective that trying to read everything without stopping.

The more you force yourself to read a book you don’t find interest in reading, the more likely you are going to lose interest completely soon.

Learn to take short breaks while studying. It helps you to stay focused for longer hours and still remember more.

  1. STUDY WHERE OTHERS ARE STUDYING

You are likely to study more when you see others studying. This is why you need to consider studying around other readers.

In my article on “How to study for JAMB and pass easily”, I mentioned that your study environment can make a huge difference in the way you study.

You should consider studying a boring book in the library where you can see others reading too. This will help to motivate you more. Hence, you read more, know more and develop interest in it gradually.

  1. SET TARGET GOALS

Your goals determine how far you go. If you are not determined, then reading may be difficult.

Set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound (SMART) goals. The truth is that you can do it better than you are doing it.

You may not realize this until you put in more effort, become more committed to reading and compare yourself to where you were yesterday.

  1. FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING IN THE COURSE

Every course/subject has something interesting about it. It is your duty and responsible to find this and love the course for it.

To develop interest in a course, the tips below will help.

  • First, assume it is interesting and you just haven’t discovered what’s interesting about it.
  • Secondly, spend more time trying to learn it. Read more, more and more until you discover the interesting part of it.

Gradually, the so-called boring course becomes very interesting to you.

Before, I used to find Biology very boring (because of too much story). I preferred Chemistry and Physics because they had lots of calculations.

Then JAMB came and I had no choice than to pass Biology too. So, I spent more than reading it and it was really easy. Now, Biology is one of the course I like most.

I was able to overcome my lack of interest in Biology, so can you!

  1. MAKE JOKES OUT OF THE MATERIAL

The way you approach the content of the book is another factor you need to consider. If you make jokes out of a course/material, it becomes less boring to you.

You may decide to tell your friend about what you think is wrong about the sentences in the book.

You may want to make funny names out of the content of the book. Tell yourself or your friends about it and you will definitely remember more.

  1. TAKE SNACKS WITH YOU

This is another useful tip you should consider. I won’t talk too much on this, I believe you should understand what I am trying to say here.

Biting on something edible can help you to read more without actually getting bored. You shouldn’t really focus too much on what you are eating.

Just keep your focus on the book while you keep skimming/scanning/reading the content of the book.

  1. DO MORE RESEARCH ABOUT THE COURSE

Like I have said earlier, the more you read about a course, the more you know about it. The more you know about it, the more you are likely to find interest in it.

If you limit yourself to the material/book you have with you, you may find it difficult to properly understand the course.

This will lead to loss of interest and you will start thinking the course is boring (which is not true). You need to do more research about the topic.

Search online for more information. Read everything you find interest in about the topic (even those you think you may not need).

This will help you to discover more interesting things and will also help you to understand and know better.

  1. REWARD YOURSELF

Telling yourself, “I will reward myself with….” is another important morale booster you can use to study boring materials effectively.
