Philips Hue Lights Unreachable? 5 Things to Try

Everything works perfectly once you’ve set up your Philips Hue system, which includes the Philips Hue smart lamps and the Philips Hue bridge. The light bulbs may be controlled using your smartphone or even a desktop computer. You’re taking advantage of Philips Hue’s ambiance and automation features.

However, the app may occasionally report that the Philips Hue lights are unavailable. What is the source of this problem, and what can you do about it? In this post, you’ll learn the most prevalent reasons of this issue, as well as how to resolve it and reconnect your Philips Hue light bulbs to your smart home.

1. Is Your Mobile Device Connected to the Same Wi-Fi Network

When your Philips Hue lights aren’t reachable through the Philips Hue app, the most common cause is that your mobile device isn’t on the same network as the Philips Hue hub.

There are a few ways to check this on your mobile device. The first thing you need do is make sure your mobile device is Wi-Fi activated. You can immediately check this on Android by swiping down on the home screen and looking for the Wi-Fi symbol. On an iPhone, look for the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar at the top of the screen.

If it’s turned on but your Philips Hue lights aren’t working, you’ll need to dig a little deeper. Open the Settings menu on your Android smartphone, go to Connections, and look for the network name under Wi-Fi near the selector. From your iPhone’s home screen, go to Settings > Wi-Fi. A blue tick should appear next to the name of the network to which you’re connected.

If the network name on your mobile device doesn’t match the network name on your Philips Hue bridge when you initially set it up, you’ll need to modify it before you can control the Philips Hue lights.

2. Check to see if the Philips Hue lights are turned on.

This may sound obvious, but you’d be shocked how often neglecting to turn off a light switch causes Philips Hue lights to become unreachable by the app.

Make sure the relevant Philips Hue bulbs are turned on by turning on the appropriate switches. Also, if you’re controlling the lights with a dimmer switch, be sure it’s turned on; otherwise, the lights may not operate. If you want such a feature, you can get the Hue dimmer switch attachment.

3. Check the Philips Hue Bridge Connections twice

If your mobile device is linked to the same network as your Philips Hue bridge, the next item to examine is the bridge itself.

To begin, trace each of the cables from the rear of your Philips Hue bridge and double-check that they’re all connected properly.

The power cord should be plugged into a nearby outlet, and you should use the Philips original manufacturer’s power adaptor.

The ethernet wire from the ethernet port should be plugged into one of the router’s numbered LAN ports. Make sure it isn’t connected to the incoming internet port by accident (usually labeled with a globe icon).

After you’ve established that everything is properly wired, check that the Philips Hue bridge is connected to the network by checking the connection status in the Philips Hue app.

When the app is launched, go to the lower right corner and select Settings.

This will bring up the Settings box, where you’ll find all of the bridges that have been installed listed under Hue Bridges. The status should be green and active in this case. On the next box, select Hue Bridges, and the network connection information will be listed. This provides the connection’s status as well as its IP address on the network.

If your Philips Hue bridge doesn’t have a green Connected status or no IP address indicated, it could be experiencing a network connection problem. If that’s the case, try the troubleshooting tips below.

Unplug the Philips Hue bridge’s power for a few seconds, then plug it back in.

Because the ethernet wire connecting the bridge and the router could be defective, swap it out.

Reset the bridge by turning it over and pressing and holding the reset button for 5 seconds with a pointed tool. This button is located next to the restore factory settings label.

If you need to reset the bridge, you’ll need to repeat the setup procedure that you followed when you first installed it.

4. Have the Philips Hue lights been installed in the proper room?

There could be an issue with how you’ve added lights to each room in the Philips Hue app if you’ve set up numerous rooms or enabled the switch for a room that isn’t turning on the lights.

To do so, go to the main app screen and tap the room you want to check. Every Philips Hue you’ve installed and want to control in that room should be listed. If you don’t see one of those lights, you’ll need to add it (which normally entails transferring it from another room where it may have been unintentionally assigned).

Simply pick Edit Room from the three dots in the upper right corner of the screen in the Room window.

Last but not least, even if all of your lights are listed in the correct room, one of them may be disabled or turned off separately. If the switch is turned to the left, the bright icon will become a dark icon.

5. Restart your wireless router

Restarting your Wi-Fi router is one of the most popular ways to fix connection issues, both on internal networks and on the internet connection itself.

Simply follow the steps outlined below.

  • Remove the power cord from your router.
  • Allow at least 30 seconds to pass.
  • Reconnect the router’s power cable.
  • Wait until all of the router lights have returned to their usual solid or green blinking states.
  • Try connecting to the Philips Hue lights again after restarting your router.
